How to calculate your insulin resistance score:

To calculate your insulin resistance score using the HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance) method, you need to have your fasting blood glucose and insulin levels measured. Here are the steps:

Calculating HOMA-IR

1. Obtain your fasting blood glucose level in mg/dL.

2. Obtain your fasting insulin level in μU/mL (micro units per milliliter).

3. Use this formula to calculate your HOMA-IR score:

   HOMA-IR = (Fasting Insulin (μU/mL) x Fasting Glucose (mg/dL)) / 405 [1][2][4]

For example, if your fasting glucose is 100 mg/dL and fasting insulin is 10 μU/mL, your HOMA-IR would be:

HOMA-IR = (10 x 100) / 405 = 2.47

Interpreting HOMA-IR Scores

- A HOMA-IR score less than 1.0 is considered insulin-sensitive (optimal). [2][4]
- A HOMA-IR score above 1.9 indicates early insulin resistance. [2][4]  
- A HOMA-IR score above 2.9 indicates significant insulin resistance. [2][4]

The higher the HOMA-IR value, the more insulin resistant you are. A score above 2.0 or 2.5 is often used as a threshold to identify insulin resistance in non-diabetic individuals.[1][5]

It's important to note that HOMA-IR is just an estimate and has limitations. For a definitive diagnosis, your healthcare provider may recommend additional tests or assessments.
