Prostaglandin D2 (PG-D2), Urine - Prostaglandins are fatty acids derived from arachidonic acid metabolism. They are closely related to the Thromboxanes and Leukotrienes. Prostaglandin D2 is derived mainly from Prostaglandin H2, and is metabolized to Dihydroketo Prostaglandin D2. Prostaglandin D2 is excreted directly into the urine. The sites of highest Prostaglandin D2 activity are the brain, spinal cord, intestines, and stomach. Prostaglandin D2 is the major Prostaglandin produced by uterine tissue. Prostaglandin D2 is a potent bronchoconstrictor, neuromodulator, and anti-antithrombin agent. It also stimulates the secretion of Pancreatic Glucagon. Prostaglandin D2 has been found to have an anti- metastatic effect on many malignant tumor cells. Prostaglandin D2 production and circulating levels are drastically suppressed by aspirin and indomethacin.

Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) is a bioactive lipid compound that plays a significant role in various physiological and pathological processes within the human body. It belongs to the family of prostaglandins, which are a group of physiologically active lipid compounds having diverse hormone-like effects in animals. PGD2 itself is produced primarily by mast cells, which are cells involved in the immune response, and it is derived from arachidonic acid through the action of the enzyme prostaglandin D synthase. This compound has several important roles, including the mediation of allergic responses and inflammation. In the context of allergies, PGD2 can cause symptoms such as bronchoconstriction and vasodilation. It's also involved in the regulation of sleep-wake cycles and acts as a neuromodulator in the brain.

In clinical and research settings, measuring the levels of PGD2 in urine can provide valuable insights into various disease states, particularly those related to allergic reactions and inflammatory conditions. Urinary levels of PGD2 metabolites, such as 9α,11β-prostaglandin F2, are often used as a non-invasive biomarker for systemic mast cell activation. This is particularly useful in conditions like systemic mastocytosis or anaphylaxis, where elevated levels of PGD2 metabolites in the urine can indicate increased mast cell activity. Additionally, research into PGD2 has expanded into areas such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders, where its role and potential as a therapeutic target are being investigated. The measurement of PGD2 levels in urine is an important tool in both diagnosis and monitoring of these conditions, providing a non-invasive method to assess the involvement and activity of prostaglandins in various pathological states.

What does it mean if your Prostaglandin D2 (PG D2), Urine result is too high?

Elevated levels of Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) or its metabolites in urine can indicate several conditions, primarily allergic reactions and mast cell disorders like mastocytosis, reflecting increased mast cell activity. These elevated levels are also observed in various inflammatory conditions, both acute and chronic, and are being researched for potential links to sleep disorders, certain cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. However, it's crucial to interpret these levels within the broader context of clinical evaluations and other diagnostic tests, as they can be influenced by dietary, medicinal, and overall health factors.

What Healthmatters Members Are Saying

5 stars rating

I have been using Healthmatters.io since 2021. I travel all over the world and use different doctors and health facilities. This site has allowed me to consolidate all my various test results over 14 years in one place. And every doctor that I show this to has been impressed. Because with  any health professional I talk to, I can pull up historical results in seconds. It is invaluable. Even going back to the same doctor, they usually do not have the historical results from their facility in a graph format. That has been very helpful.
