Non-Gluten Wheat Proteins
Wheat contains hundreds of proteins, only some of which belong to the gluten family. While gluten proteins such as gliadin receive significant attention, researchers have identified additional wheat proteins that may also interact with the immune system in susceptible individuals.
The Non-Gluten Wheat Proteins marker in the Alzheimer's LINX™ panel evaluates immune reactivity to wheat proteins outside of the traditional gluten complex. These may include proteins such as wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), albumins, globulins, and other wheat-derived compounds that have been studied for their potential role in immune activation.
This marker does not measure food allergy, celiac disease, or gluten sensitivity directly. Instead, it assesses whether the immune system has developed IgG antibodies against non-gluten wheat proteins.
Cyrex includes this biomarker as part of its investigation into potential dietary immune triggers that may contribute to broader patterns of immune activation. Researchers continue to explore how food-derived immune responses, intestinal barrier function, inflammation, and molecular cross-reactivity may influence neurological and systemic health.
A positive result does not prove that wheat is causing symptoms, cognitive decline, inflammation, or neurological disease. Likewise, a normal result does not exclude food-related immune responses. Results should be interpreted alongside the rest of the Alzheimer's LINX™ panel, dietary history, symptoms, and other clinical findings.
Because this marker is part of an immune-reactivity panel rather than a diagnostic test for food intolerance or allergy, elevated results are generally considered hypothesis-generating and may warrant further discussion with a healthcare professional.
Lab Results Explained and Tracked
What does it mean if your Non-Gluten Wheat Proteins result is too high?
Elevated Non-Gluten Wheat Proteins antibodies may indicate increased immune recognition of wheat-derived proteins that are distinct from gluten. Within the Alzheimer's LINX™ panel, this marker is intended to help identify potential dietary immune-reactivity patterns that may exist alongside other neurological, inflammatory, infectious, or environmental immune responses.
Importantly, an elevated result does not mean that a person has celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or that wheat is necessarily contributing to symptoms. The marker measures immune reactivity rather than disease activity.
Some individuals may demonstrate immune reactivity to non-gluten wheat proteins even when traditional gluten-related markers are normal. For this reason, healthcare professionals often interpret this biomarker alongside other food-reactivity markers, intestinal barrier markers, and neurological immune-reactivity markers included in the Alzheimer's LINX™ panel.
Results are best viewed as one component of a comprehensive assessment rather than as a standalone indicator of disease or a reason to eliminate foods without appropriate clinical evaluation.
